PRESIDENTS LETTER The October meeting was a great success. Everyone enjoyed learning the relaxation exercises during the yoga presentation. Our first luncheon prepared by our new caterer, Rachel Lickteig, was delicious, especially the pumpkin cake. I attended the Chicago Marathon as part of the Canadian Cheering Team. The Canadian runners are always happy to see supporters waving many Canadian flags. The Thanksgiving Dinner sponsored by the Canadian Club was a special evening with a big turnout and attractive fall decorations. We all enjoyed the turkey dinner with all the trimmings and holiday desserts. I was honoured to be invited to give the Toast to the Queen. I won two hockey game tickets in the door prize drawing. The seats were great, the game was exciting but the Blackhawks lost 4-3 to Dallas. We are still requesting prizes for our raffle to raise funds for our 50th Anniversary Party. We presently have four prizes including a $100 gift certificate for the Park Grill in Millennium Park, graciously donated by Dan Schering, a native of Toronto and the manager of that wonderful restaurant. Next time you stop by, say hi. In December the CWC will be supporting “Dress for Success”. This outstanding organization provides professional clothing to women who are seeking employment and going on job interviews. Please bring donations to the Christmas meeting. All sizes are needed!! Best Wishes to you and your family. Enjoy a happy and blessed American Thanksgiving. - Bev Paonessa

About An American Christmas Carol A modern day echo of the original classic by Charles Dickens, “An American Christmas Carol” is a story of conversion and redemption set in the Chicago of the 1980s.
Michael Barron is an up-and-coming lawyer whose interests are power and money, until providence declares otherwise. His life changes abruptly one late December night, when he rescues Sarah, an elderly concentration camp survivor, from the cold. Sarah decides to repay him by opening up her past in order to impart the Four Great Truths. But will she be able to teach Michael the truth before he is lost forever to materialism, greed and cynicism.
Thus the journey begins…a journey to discover The Four Great Truths of life.
About the author: After a lifetime spent in pursuit of a successful business career, K. Raphael Kinney, a Chicago native, returns to his first love – creative writing. His hobbies include education (4 university degrees) and foreign travel (38 countries so far.) Kinney writes in the category of inspirational fiction. Book Club A small group gathered at the home of (withheld) where we discussed the book, “Heart Matters” by Adrienne Clarkson. Clarkson shared stories of her early life, her parents and the family’s immigration to Canada. The book had many details about her role as Governor-General and how she worked with the Chretien and Martin governments to represent Canada from 1999 to 2005.
The next book selection is the novel, “The Book of Negroes” by Canadian author Lawrence Hill. Also under the alternate title of “Someone Knows My Name,” this fascinating tale is written in the style of historical fiction, spanning the years of 1745 to 1802. “The remarkable novel transports the reader from an African village to a plantation in the southern United States, from a soured refuge in Nova Scotia to the coast of Sierra Leone, in a back-to-Africa odyssey of 1,200 former slaves. “The Book of Negroes” introduces one of the strongest female characters in recent fiction, a woman who cuts a swath through a world hostile to her colour and her sex.”
We'll Dance Thru the Decades It's our big year and you will see and hear little "moments in time" at most home meetings. We begin our first decade, the 60's, at Lucie's home. It appeared at the beginning of the 60's we would have a continuation of the carefree good times of the 50's, but by the end of a tumultuous 10 years, we had a wild new culture. We went from Jackie Kennedy's White House, with elegant clothes and manners, to the wild behavior and styles of the Haight Asbury Hippies.
Our big celebration will be in the spring (late April or early May). Exact date will be published in the December news letter. We hope our Snowbirds will have returned and we can all join in toasting our First 50 Years. |
