PRESIDENTS LETTER

Just as I was thinking this might be an Indian summer, it turned into a very early Fall. What is up with this weather? I do believe it’s Mother Nature letting me know that I’ve had as much 90 degree free weather as any one person is allowed. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she’s going to be nice enough to allow the temperatures to hover near the 70 degree mark so I can enjoy my favourite time of year for as long as possible. So far, she’s not holding up any part of the bargain.

Nevertheless, I love this time of year! I love the wonderful colours from the fabulous Maple trees and the crisp air that adds a bounce to my step. I remember when I first moved here straight from Labrador, it was the first time in a long time that I had experienced this glorious season. It was such a contrast to the Black Spruce that dominates the landscape there. I marveled at the trees and I just fell in love with the richness of Fall.

For me, there is one place that absolutely screams Fall and each year we make an annual trek to Oriole Springs, an apple orchard in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin that my husband Tom has been going to since he was a boy. We pick Jonathans, Macs and some Honey Crisp. We wander around the orchard looking for the most perfect fruit, thinking about the apple pie we’ll be making when we get home. Tom can never leave without sampling the donuts that are made right on the premises along with their delicious apple cider. We spend an enjoyable morning there and then the pie crust maker and the apple peeler head home to bake.

Another place that beckons us is beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. Great colours, fun things to do and, for me being a Maritimer, a chance to get close to some water, even though it’s fresh water, not salt! Once I enter Door County a sense of calm just floods my mind! I’m looking forward to a visit with my very best friend of 42 years, Debbie Williams. This year marks her 8th trip to the area. This will be her first trip to Door County and you can bet she’s going to fall in love with the area just as I have.

I hope that everyone has their own fun things to do this Fall and you all take advantage of this great area to spend some time with family and friends. Who knows, there might be a slice of apple pie just around the corner.

- Paula

The first meeting and tour of the beautiful Columbia Yacht Club was a great start to our new year. We had such a wonderful turnout and we were blessed with sunshine. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food. Later in the month, a group of eight ladies enjoyed the beauty of the flowers at Cantigny. We had an excellent docent for the mansion tour and we ended our fabulous outing with a great lunch and ice cream cones for dessert. We look forward to our Yoga session in October. Happy Thanksgiving to both you and your families.

MEMBER NEWS

Last year, Ruth mentioned that she received a thank you letter from a child in Texas, who had received one of Ruth's bears. This little girl took the bear to school and told the story of the Chicago lady who, at 99, hand makes these treasures.

This summer, when the little Texan came for a visit, she went to Ruth's to pick her 2009 Christmas present. She finally met the gracious "bear lady" which was a very special thrill for a 9 year old.

Thank you Ruth, you are our CWC Treasure.

Birthday wishes to Norah Johnson on October 4th. and Neelum Aggarwal on October 31st.

Attention All Adventurers

For our special event this year we are offering a personalized Segway Tour along Chicago’s lakefront. This is a three hour tour which starts off with 20 minutes of instruction prior to heading out toward Grant Park.

The Segway is the first of its kind – a self-balancing, personal transportation device that requires no special skills to operate. Segways are designed to be used in any pedestrian environment and will carry you gracefully throughout our city. Riding a Segway and seeing the sites has never been as easy or more fun.

If you would like to participate, please contact Susanna Doolin by phone or by e-mail. We will meet on Wednesday, October 14th at 9:45 am at the Segway Tours office at 400 E. Randolph Street. The tour will commence at 10:00 am and conclude at 1:00 pm. The cost of the tour is normally $70.00 per person but since we have secured a 10% discount, the cost to us will be $63.00. Lunch will be optional after the tour.
